Thinking of You Poems

Thinking of you poems stress helping others, not ourselves.

Lily Work

A secret gift,
A note of cheer,
A work beyond the call.

Tho’ no one knows
‘Cept Him above,
Inside you’re standing tall.

Robert Ogden

In the construction of Solomon’s Temple, the Bible mentions lily work on the top of the pillars. Not knowing all of the ramifications of this work, I can still imagine that whether text or graphic, the lily work was difficult to see…perhaps impossible.

There is in our lives the potential to do good for others that will rebound and do us good as well. More than sowing and reaping, I believe the lily work is that which we do for others that brings absolutely no attention, no favor, and no credit to ourselves.

Buying lunch for someone special in hopes of endearing them to us is not lily work. Secretly arranging lunch or dessert for someone who needs to know they are cared about…especially someone we have no personal interest in…is.

We grow as we venture out and help others while having no ulterior motives.

Much we do for loved ones is seen and rightly so. They need to know we love them by deed as well as by word.

But both loved ones and others need to be ministered to secretly for our sake, not just theirs.

Will this world be a better place because I lived in it? My lily work says, “Yes!”
