Teacher Appreciation Poem

Here’s a teacher appreciation poem about the influence one has on his students.

Influence

The time you spent
To mold my life
I never shall forget.

Your influence
Still lingers on
As I my standards set.

Robert Ogden

This is a poem inspired by a preacher I once heard, Dr. Jack Hyles of First Baptist Church in Hammond, Indiana. He spoke to us probably in the 1980’s at a teachers convention in Tampa, Florida.

I remember vividly the point of his message because unlike so many preachers who have an outline of three points and a poem (and those points frequently have to be alliterated), Dr. Hyles hit me and my colleagues hard with one point and repeatedly drove it home: your main job is to be an influencer of students.
