Relationship Poems

Relationship poems cover a wide spectrum of human interaction.

Veneer

It’s hard to show
Your inner self
To those who hold you dear.

It’s easier
To keep part back
Behind a thin veneer.

Robert Ogden

Do we ever reveal one hundred percent of our inner psyche? We adjust to the people we are around, varying the degrees of our self exposure to fit our comfort level with the company at hand.

Insecurity, fear of being laughed at or talked about, fear of retribution, fear of being misinterpreted…all of these and more are reasons for not wishing to open ourselves up to others beyond safe and secure levels.

Just this morning I was purchasing some volleyball equipment for my daughter and noticed my comfort level decrease when I left the male attendant in the shoe department and encountered a female employee in the clothing department. I was irked at the change in my veneer in response to the change in my company.
