Friendship and Love Poems
Friendship and love poems show how closely related these two values are.
My Friend
I sure was right The day I thought Our love would never end.
But golly, gee, I was surprised To find out you’re my friend.
Robert Ogden
This poem illustrates both the close relationship between love and friendship, and the wrong order in which they should appear when searching for a mate.
When contemplating a possible marriage partner, a person should look for the same qualities he finds in a close friend before getting emotionally involved. When emotions flare, it is too hard to think objectively. If you’re going to have a lasting relationship, it must be based on values such as accepting each other for who you are (faults included), not worrying about whether they will up and leave you some day for someone else, treating relatives and non-lovers with kindness and respect.
A close friend for life is better than an emotional marriage partner for a few years. Yet, find a close friend on whom you can set your affections and you will have a happy marriage.
