Footprint Poem

This footprint poem reminds us that we all leave a testimony…good or bad.

Footprint

My grandson came
Into my room
To lay and watch tv.

He tucked his socks
Into my shoes
And switched my mind to Thee.

Robert Ogden

This footprint story actually happened while vacationing in a timeshare in Mulberry, Florida, on July 30, 2009.

Our unit was in a quiet subdivision rather secluded and good for resting and going for walks. My daughter and son-in-law had just had their third child (Abigail, their first daughter) ten days earlier, and since they lived only 45 minutes away, I offered to pick up Joanna and the kids (Daniel-4, Caleb-2, and Abby-.027) and drive them here to spend the day. Paul would come after work, stay and visit, and take his crew home that evening.

Naturally, our peaceful abode was turned upside down by the stampeding of 4 little legs being chased by 4 larger legs (Aunt Connie and Uncle Nathan…okay, and occasionally me) up and down the hallway from the bedroom to the living room.

Eventually, Caleb decided to take a time out and join me while I lay on my bed trying to hear a movie on tv. I think he was attracted to the paper plate on my stomach that was balancing a sandwich and some chips.

Before I knew it, he was up in bed next to me, reclining in a classically lazy pose, imitating me with a paper plate on his belly.

It didn’t take long for my wife, daughter and the rest of the local paparazzi to line up for photo ops. There were plenty of giggles and laughs as my grandson basked in the limelight and I smirked with the satisfaction of his company.

Suddenly, my wife pointed out a scene she and I had witnessed one other time in our lives, when my oldest son, Nathan, was young.

Before getting up on the bed with me, Caleb had removed his socks, walked over to my pair of shoes, and placed them one in each shoe. A footprint poem was born.

I quickly smiled, then remembered along with my wife the similar incident that occurred nearly 30 years ago and how it had brought conviction then about the footprint I was making for him to follow.

Relishing in this divine moment, I took time to reevaluate my current walk with Him and make sure that each footprint I was leaving was left deliberately with a purpose in mind.
