Famous Friendship Poems

Famous friendship poems allow us to conjecture how our lives would be affected were we friends with a well known figure.

Rock of Chickamauga

When all around
Him fled with fear,
He stood against his foes.

His stand still helps
To brace me when
I face my daily woes.

Robert Ogden

The character of the man described by this poem, George Henry Thomas, inspired many during the Civil War.

Thomas was a Union general who despised the political maneuvering of his fellow officers for promotion. He cared about the men under him and wanted to see them develop into efficient fighting soldiers. He once was promoted over Ulysses Grant only to voluntarily give it up when he discovered it was being used to discipline Grant.

As a soldier, Thomas was always prepared. His armies were never surprised, and they were never defeated…not even by Stonewall Jackson.

Thomas earned the first victory for the Union Army at Mill Springs, gained fame with his courageous stand at Chickamauga that saved the Union army from total destruction thus earning him the title the "Rock of Chickamauga," and watched as his well trained troops launch a victorious surprise attack in full view of the enemy at Chattanooga.

Thomas led the only attack of the war that resulted in the complete destruction of a Confederate army...the Battle of Nashville in 1864.

Now, as I read about his life , I am inspired to resist daily temptations and persevere under sometimes less than ideal circumstances at home or work.
