Which Plaque Poems Touch Your Hot Buttons?
Plaque poems are designed to express any topic in concise fashion. What do you prefer...love, friendship, funny, inspiration? I like poems that make me think about myself, my values, and my actions. This art form has a way of delivering a message in nugget form that sticks with the reader. I love the challenge of trimming the fat off my wordiness and choosing words that have more bang for their buck, tucking them into two stanzas totaling twenty-eight syllables, and making the third and sixth lines rhyme.
These poems are short and to the point...easy to remember. I even memorize the ones dearest to me. They aren't as long as regular greeting card poems, but the trade off is that they are easier to remember. When was the last time you memorized a greeting card poem that you received as a gift? I can say, “Never.”
Plaque poems use the same meter over and over...granted, not very original...and it is the use of this same meter that seems to trigger my memory skills. I guess they're like CD's...regardless of the different content they contain from one disk to another, they fit the same mold of size and shape so they can fit into a CD player.
Perhaps you like the analogy between flowers and friends in “As Flowers Grow.” Maybe you enjoy the contrivance of a friendship between a historical figure and the reader in “Rock of Chickamauga.” We are each built differently, and just as I aspire to convey my views of life in short, limited verse, others will prefer different lengths and meter. But that's the way it should be.
So, what's your taste in poetry as I have displayed it on this site? Which convicts you to make a change? Which one needs to be read by a loved one? Does someone you know need to see what you see in a poem displayed here?
Some have diaries. Some write books. I dabble in poetry in an attempt to distill life into nuggets more easily chewed and remembered. A glimpse here, an emotion there, a life lesson learned...these are the substance of my verse. They are offered as rhyming content intended to amuse, to help, or to make one think.
These plaque poems are intended to be of use to those who read and enjoy them. You can give them to a loved one, a co-worker...anyone who you think would enjoy them. Perhaps I'll be blessed and hear of someone who benefited by reading one. They are yours to enjoy.
